we actually would expect investigators to come later when the sun comes up. fire happened last night. you can see behind me this is a small complex in hayward at second and e streets which is across the street from all-saints catholic schools. the fire started in the kitchen and spread from there. you can see by charring outside of that apartment building, corner unit, i believe it's unit number 9, that it spread from the kitchen and seems to have consumed much of everything inside. when hayward fire arrived they made entry and found the woman that you mentioned in the kitchen area. she was unresponsive. did have a pulse. taken to eden medical center. condition is unknown. we believe she was seriously hurt in this fire. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." just about 6:02. a san jose mother who lied about the attempted abduction of her 2-year-old daughter may be charged later today for filing a

>> good morning to you. it is another spare the air day. you can actually see that layer of haze so thick out there. as we head throughout the day today, temperatures will climb from the 30s and 40s where we are now into the 70s in some cities and we keep that climb going for the weekend. just want to point out what we have in store for you. if you are headed out to that mavericks festival, just beautiful conditions. at 1:00 p.m., 69 degrees. unseasonably warm as we head throughout this weekend. this is at the beach as you can imagine some of your inland cities will be even warmer. stay tuned. i have your seven-day outlook in my next report. first, let's look at your drive this morning. friday. hi, mike. the bay bridge already has a backup cash lanes. fastrak lanes okay. this is light for the friday commute over at the bay bridge. nonetheless the build is on and we'll probably see metering lights today. we don't see them all the time on friday. we're looking at a good volume of traffic. the map shows you no slowing approaching the toll plaza. just past there up the incline
6:03 am
where you see slowing start. that's why i think you might see metering lights. we'll track that. not always the case on a friday. we're looking southbound 280 toward vista point off-ramp. that crash working there involving originally four cars and then the reports of some deer that may have been injured in the area. waiting for updates to see if they have the deer injured and in lanes but it looks like traffic has been flowing past the scene for 15 minutes without major delays. a lot of lanes. little traffic through the area. watch for activity as you head down into woodside. live look outside shows you san mateo bridge over to the peninsula with taillights. 880, 92 on the east bay starting to slow a tad bit on the approach out of hayward. 880 moves smoothly past the truck scales and fremont no delays for 880 yesterday and here north 101 we're starting to see things bog down just around the 680 interchange where we take a look because of volume of traffic. even friday light is a relative term. lighter but still slowing. back to you.

6:15 am
this could really be a game changer. for the last ten years we've been giving developing economies like china and india a taste of capitalism. they have this growing standard of living. we're this close to taking those jobs away. the minute robots are cheaper to operate than people, what will happen to china? they lose their jobs. they are our biggest bank. this has serious implications. >> you are all over it for us as always. thank you so much. >> scott has good guests. all right thank you very much. look forward to that. we're always looking for cheaper ways to fly. if you ever wondered how far in advance you need to book a flight to snag the best deals, we've got your answer right now. according to cheapair.com. it's 49 days flying domestic. 81 days if you are flying international. you have to get on it early. the website says fares start out high and so mark calendars early

6:17 am
spare the air alert in place in the greater bay area throughout the day and tonight. likely as we head through tonight, temperatures creeping up means you probably won't need it as much. so as we head throughout the day today, temperatures are going to be nice and comfortable. this is the big story. this is what we're excited about. after two years, they have called the mavericks competition this sunday. all of the waves, the big swells are driven by a storm system, a megastorm system, mostly circulating over the water and not impacting anyone but islands in the area 1,500 miles away. this is going to impact us as we head throughout the next couple days. let's talk about what's happening out there. don't get in the water even though it will be perfect at the beaches. the reason why these waves are great for surfing is because they are long period waves. they last 20 to 25 seconds long. that means the surfers can catch a wave and we can watch them ride those. it will be outstanding if you will be out there standing on the beach. 1:00 p.m., 69 degrees. half moon bay has a restricted

6:20 am
we'll track that coming off the grade. no crashes. no incidents reported there. bay bridge toll plaza we do have a backup because metering lights were turned on just before 6:15 and so we see a good volume of traffic slowly building to about mid parking lot. volume of traffic coming down the east shore freeway looked relatively heavy and let's look at that east shore freeway here west of 880 under university avenue. there's a good volume of traffic. expect to see slowing out of richmond today which isn't always the case on a friday morning. during the morning commute but you know what, we're approaching the three-day weekend. a lot of folks are putting in extra time on friday because they will take off monday. keep that in mind. a shift. back to you. >> we'll be here. >> indeed we will. we would not miss it. 6:21 right now. coming up, we all love the olympic games, right? especially because they are right here on nbc. sometimes it's cool to have the x factor. we'll let you know about extreme sports contest that could find a home in lake tahoe. that's coming up just ahead.

"today in the bay's" tracie potts is live in washington this morning. trac tracie, the details keep changing. i'm checking the wires. how many people are being held hostage? how many of them are americans?
6:30 am
do we know? >> we don't know. sometimes it's most prudent to tell you that we simply don't have a good number for that. what i can tell you is is that originally when this developed on wednesday we believe as many as 41 were held hostage including some americans. some americans we believe made it out. some according to the white house are still believed to be held hostage. we also know that as part of that raid according to the algerians, six people were killed. the militants say more. 35 were killed. we know that some killed were hostages. we don't know they were americans. we don't know how many. >> what about the extent that the u.s. is going to take some stake in this and get involved in this situation? >> the u.s. offered its help. algeria refused. we didn't know they were doing this raid until after it had already happened. the u.s. is forced to be hands off in terms of what's going on inside algeria. we do and had an unmanned drone
